Family matters that cross the Iranian border
A marriage celebrated in one country and a divorce granted in another can leave a person married in Iranian records and divorced everywhere else. That gap is what most of this work is about.
A foreign divorce and its Iranian consequences
A divorce granted by a foreign court does not automatically change a person’s status in Iranian records. Until it is recognised or the position is otherwise regularised, the Iranian record may still show a subsisting marriage — with consequences for remarriage, for documents, and sometimes for travel.
Marriages abroad
A marriage concluded outside Iran can generally be registered in Iranian records. Whether that is necessary depends on what the couple needs it for — dealing with property, a child’s documents, or simply consistency between two countries’ records.
Children, custody and maintenance
Where parents live in different countries, two legal systems may each have something to say about custody, and the practical question is usually which forum will actually decide and what the other will do with that decision. These are difficult matters and we would rather set out the realistic range at the start than encourage an expectation the forum will not meet.
