The three questions we are asked first
Almost every foreign client opens with the same three, so we will answer them here rather than make you look.
Can you represent a foreigner? Yes. Foreign individuals and foreign companies can bring and defend claims in Iran, and can be represented by Iranian counsel.
Must I travel to Iran? Usually not. Most matters are conducted on a power of attorney granted where you live and legalised for use in Iran. Some steps need a physical presence, and we will tell you at the outset if yours is one of them.
How does engaging an Iranian firm work in practice? This is the question people are too polite to ask. Sanctions affect how funds move, not whether you may instruct a lawyer. We will be direct with you about what is workable before you commit to anything.
What we are usually instructed on
Four situations account for most of the work that reaches us from abroad.
- A contract with an Iranian counterparty that has gone wrong — unpaid invoices, undelivered goods, a joint venture in dispute.
- An estate in Iran: a relative has died and there is property, a bank account or a share in a business to deal with.
- Real property owned in Iran that is occupied, disputed, or needs to be sold from abroad.
- A family matter with a foreign element — a marriage or divorce abroad that has to take effect in Iran, or the reverse.
- A judgment obtained outside Iran that now needs to mean something inside it.
Why a Tehran firm rather than an international one
An Iranian court case is argued in Persian, under Iranian law, before Iranian judges, by a lawyer admitted in Iran. Foreign firms coordinate; they do not appear. If your matter will end up in an Iranian forum, you need Iranian counsel either way — and going direct removes a layer of cost and a layer of translation.
Our founder, Hosein Shahrokhi, has practised for close to twenty years and has represented companies and well-known individuals in cases that ran through Iran’s appellate courts. The firm works in Persian, English and Turkish.
